Byam Martin Island is located on the northern side of the Viscount Melville Sound (the western sections of the Parry Channel) — the body of water that separates the Queen Elizabeth Islands (on the northern side) from those Arctic islands that lie adjacent to the Canadian mainland. Immediately to the west, 27 km across the Byam Channel, is the large Melville Island; to the northeast, 35 km across the Austin Channel, lies Bathurst Island.

At 1,150 km² in area, Byam Martin Island measures 46 km in length (from north to south) with a maximum width of 37 km. The terrain is quite low, averaging 100 m over much of the island and reaching 153 m in the south and is cut by numerous branching river valleys.
