Charles Island lies on the southern side of the Hudson Strait — the
wide body of water that separates Baffin Island (on the north) from the Ungava Peninsula and Ungava Bay
regions of the Canadian mainland (on the south). The island is located 19 km west-northwest from Cap de Nouvelle-France (the
northernmost tip of the Ungava Peninsula).
Charles Island (235 km²) is narrow and elongate in appearance, with a length of 37 km (east to west) and a width of 8.5 km at its widest in the east, narrowing to 3.5 km across the centre. Steep cliffs and slopes line the coastline in the northeast.
