Helena Island

Helena Island (326 km² in area) is one of the many satellite islands that lie immediately off the coast of the large
Bathurst Island. The island is located 7 km north, across the Sir William Parker Strait,
from the northern coast of Bathurst Island, opposite the peninsula that is formed by the May and Young inlets (the May
Inlet is visible at the bottom of the above image). On the right side of the image are the smaller islands of the Berkeley
and Hosken groups.
The island is rectangular in shape, measuring 39 km in length and 11 km in width. The southern coast rises quite steeply to a range of low, flat-topped, hills (averaging 220 m above sea level) that runs the length of the island. They northern slopes are shallower, descending to a low-lying coastal belt.
