Melbourne Island overview map The small (381 km²) Melbourne Island (Qitiqtaryuaq) is located in the southern Arctic region at the western end of the broad Queen Maud Gulf, situated 9 km off the eastern side of the Canadian mainland's Kent Peninsula. To the north, 30 km across the Queen Maud Gulf, lies the Canadian Arctic's second largest island, Victoria Island.

The island is oval in shape, measuring 29 km in length (southeast to northwest) with a maximum width of 16 km. The island takes the form of a low-lying dome, with gentle slopes on all sides sloping to a height of around 100 m above sea level in the centre. The landscape is dominated by water features with numerous small lakes and extensive areas of marshland.
