overview map Fourth largest of the many islands and islets that lie off Baffin Island, Resolution Island is located at the eastern end of the Hudson Strait lying 36 km across the Annapolis and Gabriel straits from the Meta Incognita Peninsula of southeastern Baffin Island. Between Resolution Island and the Baffin Island mainland are the islands that form the Lower Savage Islands group (the Annapolis Strait lies on their western side, the Gabriel Strait on their east). To the north, 3.8 km across the Graves Strait from Resolution Island, is the 287 km² Edgell Island and the southern limits of Frobisher Bay. To east lie the open waters of the Davis Strait. Resolution Island, Edgell Island, their numerous offshore islets and the Lower Savage Islands are sometimes referred to as the Resolution Group.

At 1,015 km² in area, Resolution Island measures 50 km in length (from southeast to northwest along the southern shore) and 32.3 km in width through the centre. Its coastline is highly fractured by many small inlets, bays and offshore islets, leading to an interior that generally slopes upwards from the south with maximum elevations of near 500 m above sea level occurring in the north. The landscape is often rugged, particularly in the northern and central sections, with steep slopes and numerous small lakes.
