Salisbury Island, overview map Salisbury Island (Akulliq) is the second largest of a trio of islands that are located at the western end of the Hudson Strait — the wide channel that separates Baffin Island from the Ungava Peninsula of the Canadian mainland. The island (at right side of the above image) is situated 23 km northeast from Nottingham Island and 31 km southeast from Mill Island.

Salisbury Island (804 km² in area) has a maximum southeast to northwest length of 47 km and a maximum width of 23 km. The landscape is characterised by an upland area of between 250 m and 500 m in elevation that occupies much of the central and eastern sections (the highest regions of this zone have a light covering of snow in the above image). On the eastern coast the upland region drops sharply to the coast. The western side of the island comprises a lower terrain (20 m to 160 m above sea level) that drops gradually to the coast via low hills and gradual slopes.
