Ayon Island is located immediately offshore on the East Siberian Sea coast of northeastern Siberia. It is separated from the mainland by a very narrow channel known as the Malyy Chaunskiy Strait. The bay to the south and east is that of the Chaunskaya Guba. The island is generally low and flat.
