The islands of Faial and Pico are the most westerly islands of the central group of Azorean islands. Faial, the smaller of the pair, is at the left in the image. At the top of the image is the southern coast of São Jorge.

Pico is the second largest of the Azores covering an area of 447 km² and measuring 42 km in length and up to 15 km in width. Dominating the western end of the island is the impresive conical-shaped stratovolcano of Pico Alto, rising to 2,351 m — the highest mountain on Portuguese territory. The rest of the island stretches out to the southeast behind the volcano in a descending plateau of smaller volacnic cones — the tallest among these being Pico do Urze (899 m) and Caveiro (1,076 m).
