Santa Maria is the easternmost island of the Azores, lying 1,408 km east of Potugal's Cabo da Roca (west of Lisbon) and 80 km south form the island of São Miguel. At 97 km² it is the third smallest of the main islands, with maximum dimensions of 17 km in length and 9.5 km in width. For a sense of scale, the runway on the west coast of the island (a former US air base) is 3,048 m long and 60 m wide.
