The Serranilla Bank, measuring 40 km in length and 32 km in width, is a mostly submerged carbonate platform located 110 km west from the reefs of the Bajo Nuevo (New Bank) and around 400 km northeast from Isla de San Andrés. Most of the formation lies in deep water (see large size image), with only the southeastern portion (shown in the above image) consisting of shallow reef environments, breaking reefs and a few emergent cays. The entire bank covers an area in excess of 1,200 km².
Several small cays are found on the eastern side of the bank — Beacon Cay (the largest), West Breaker, Middle Cay, and East Cay.
