Although part of the same group as Ashmore Reef & Cartier Island, Hibernia Reef does not form part of the Ashmore Reef & Cartier Island External Territory of Australia. Situated 42 km northeast of Ashmore Reef and 62 km northwest of Cartier Island, Hibernia Reef consists of an approximately oval-shaped reef that tapers to a point on the western side. The reef has no permanent land, but large areas of the reef can become exposed at low tide. The reef covers an area of 11.5 km².
