With an area of 190 km² Augustus Island is the largest of the several thousand islands that are spread along the coast of the Kimberley. The island, which has a highly irregular shape, is located on the south side of the large Brunswick Bay, of which the islands east coast forms the southern limit. The west side of the island faces the Camden Sound, with the southeast facing the Port George IV. It is separated from the mainland by the Rogers Strait.

The island measures up to 22 km north to south and has a maximum width of 16 km. The interior is rocky, being composed mainly of weathered quartz sandstones. Like many of the islands in the region, the lanscape is marked by a myriad of long grooves and fissures (see large size images).
