Second largest of the Near Islands (an island group located in the far southwest of the Aleutian chain), the 221 km² island of Agattu lies 37 km southeast from Chirkof Point — the easternmost extremity of Attu — and 27 km southwest from the tiny Alaid in the Semichi Island group (also a member of the Near Islands). Measuring 29 km in length and up to 14 km across, the island's tundra-like terrain rises to height of 632 m in the northwest mountains.
