Abington Reef is a small, oval-shaped, reef formation measuring around 4 km in length (northwest to southeast) and 2.5 km in width, covering an area of some 7 km². Its perimeter of seaward reefs, over which the ocean swells break, protect a shallow lagoon environment within the interior.

Abington Reef is located 20 km southeast from the small Malay Reef (its nearest neighbour in the region) and 120 km southwest from the Flinders Reef complex; the outer reefs of the Great Barrier Reef lie 145 km to the southwest.
