Ashmore Reef lies beyond the far northeastern regions of the Great Barrier Reef, due east of the Torres Strait. It consists of an irregular series of submerged reefs forming an elongated atoll-like ring that encloses a deep and open lagoon — reefs are less well-developed on the east (leeward side) of the reef. Situated 6 km to the northeast of Ashmore Reef is the smaller Boot Reef. Both reefs have been little explored, although serve as remote destinations for dive-tour operators.

notes

Ashmore Reef is not to be confused with Australia's External Territory of Ashmore Reef & Cartier Island (located in the Timor Sea).
