Boot Reef lies in the remote waters of the northern Coral Sea, situated 6 km northeast from its larger neighbour of Ashmore Reef. The reef comprises two breaking reefs, separated by a narrow channel, that form an S-shaped structure. Each unit is elongate in form, with wide reefs that completely enclose narrow, but deep, central lagoons.
