Diamond Islets

Diamond Islets

The Diamond Islets occupy the eastern end of a large arrowhead-shaped formation that is for the most part submerged in deep waters (very faintly observable in the above image), measuring 100 km in length and up to 52 km in width, covering an area of 3,000 km² (see panoramic image). They lie 23 km west from Lihou Reef and over 330 km northeast from the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef. The southwestern end of the southern arm (not shown above) contains the Tregosse Reefs.

The Diamond Islets comprise four small islets in total. On the northern arm are West Diamond Islet, Central Diamond Islet, and East Diamond Islet — each separated by around 10 km from one another. On the southern arm, 14 km southwest from Central Diamond Islet, is situated the small Southwest Diamond Islet. The islets are vegetated with low scrub and grasses and are either partially or completely surrounded by fringing reefs that enclose small lagoons.
