The Portlock Reefs are amongst the most northerly reefs of Coral Sea. They are part of a series of large, submerged, carbonate platform structures that run parallel to the Great Barrier Reef (50 km to the west) for a distance of around 100 km — the series includes Ashmore Reef in the south.
