Onotoa, an atoll of the South Gilbert Islands, is located 53 km southeast from Tabiteuea and 65 km northwest of the Gilbert Islands smallest island of Tamana. Like many of the atolls found in the Gilbert Islands, Onotoa consists of an almost continuous line of narrow islands forming the eastern side of the atoll. Across the shallow and coral-studded lagoon, the western side is formed by series of submerged reefs
