The second largest island of the Mariana Isands — and largest of the CNMI — Saipan is located towards the southern end of the Mariana chain, situated 4.5 km northeast, across the Saipan Channel, from Tinian and 117 km south from Anatahan; Guam lies 184 km to the southwest, beyond the island of Rota.
The island has maximum dimensions of 23 km in length (orientated northeast to southwest) and 10 km in width, covering an area of 115 km².
