Located in the centre of the northern lagoon waters that are bound by the Récif des Français (on the west) and the Grand Récif de Cook (on the east) lie the Îles Belep (Belep Islands), located around 50 km northwest of the northern tip of Grande Terre. With a total area of 67 km² the group consists of several smaller low islands as well as the larger and hillier Île Art and Île Pott.
Île Art is the largest member ofthe group with an area of 52 km², measuring 16 km in length and 5 km across. The smaller islands consist of two groups of islands located to the south of Île Art: the Îles Daos du Nord and Îles Daos du Sud; Île Niéone, the largest of these, lies closest to Île Art.
