Located on, and extending for 180 km beyond, the northeast coast of Grande Terre lies the Grand Récif de Cook. The reef is not as well developed as its western counterpart — the Récif des Français — and consists, in the main, of a series of broken reef segments separated by narrow channels. Only in its southern reaches does the reef form any continuous barrier.
