Île Matthew, located 525 km east of the southern tip of New Caledonia, can be considered as the southernmost island of the Vanuatu Archipelago. As such it has, along with Hunter Island, been the subject of a long-running territorial dispute with Vanuatu over jurisdiction of the island. Together with Hunter Island, they are the two southernmost active volcanoes of the New Hebrides island arc system.
Measuring around 500 m in length the island consists of two peaked lobes that are connected by a low isthmus. The western lobe is the highest at around 150 m. The island is volcanically active.
