Lisianski Island (Papa'apoho) lies 220 km west from Laysan Island. The island measures around 1.6 km in length and sits at the northern end of a large shallow-water coral reef ecosystem known as Neva Shoal which extends over an an area of around 1,100 km². The island is low lying, being composed of sand and coral, with an exposed ledge of reef rock and a series of small tidal pools on the eastern coast.

The island is home to the largest breeding colony of Bonin Petrels (Pterodroma hypoleuca) in Hawai'i — three-quarters of all breeding pairs in Hawai'i breed here. Breeding here, aslo, are threatened species such as the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Hawaiian Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi).
