Necker Island (Mokumanamana) lies near the southeastern end of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands chain, being located 532 km northwest from Kauai and 135 km east from the French Frigate Shoals.
Necker Island is small and rocky, measuring 1.1 km in length and around 300 m in width with an area of 18.5 ha — making it the second smallest of the main islands of the NWHI. The island is for the most part steep-sided and cliff-lined, consisting of bare rock with very little soil.
The island emerges from the northwestern end of one of the largest submarine banks of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. At over 1,300 km² in area, the Necker bank (shown in the above image) has dimensions of 65 km by 25 km, orientated northwest to southeast. Water depths over the bank are shallow, with average depths of between 20 m and 50 m.
