The waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands contain numerous seamounts that do not breach the surface. The more well-known and studied of these are known as 'The Banks' and include Raita Bank (at left in the image), Pioneer Bank, St. Rogatien Bank and the Brooks Banks.
The large oval-shaped Raita Bank, located midway between the Gardner Pinnacles and Maro Reef, has a minimum depth of around 18 m and extends for 18 km by 20 km with the longer dimension running northeast to southwest. It is protected by the Raita Bank Preservation Area.
