The most southeasterly unit of the Paracel Islands, Bombay Reef lies 51 km southeast from the small reef of Vuladdore and 87 km southeast from the islands of the Crescent Group. Towards the east are over 550 km of empty seas before the isolated Scarborough Shoal is reached.
Measuring 18 km in length (east to west) and averaging 5 km across, Bombay Reef rises steeply from the seabed below to form an elongated structure that is, for the most part, submerged. From the seaward perimeter the reef-slopes descend gradually before dropping sharply to a deep lagoon basin in the center.
