Situated 18 km south from the Crescent Group and 12 km north from the small Passu Keah reef, Discovery Reef is the largest single reef formation of the Paracel Islands group, measuring 27 km in length (orientated east to west) and averaging 7-8 km across (north to south). The reef, with the exception of a few emergent patches, is totally submerged and forms an elongated ring broken by two deep passages on the southern side.
