North Reef, the most northwesterly component of the Paracel Islands, lies 56 km north from the Crescent Group and 69 km northwest from the Amphitrite Group; the large Chinese island of Hainan is located 205 km to the northwest.
The reef, which rises steeply from the seabed, measures 10 km in length (east to west) with a maximum width of 4 km, and has a very similar form to that of Bombay Reef (located in the far southeast, 150 km distant.) As is common with most of the reefs in the region, it is for the most part submerged.
