Oeno, located 121 km northwest from Pitcairn Island, is a small circular-shaped atoll formation of 1.6 km² in area. The atoll rises steeply from the ocean bed and consists of an encircling reef crest that encloses a shallow lagoon averaging 3-6 m in depth. Inside the lagoon are two main islands (with a land area 0.65 km²) and a number of drying sand banks. The largest island — Oeno — is densely vegetated with atoll forest, Pandanus, Coconut and scrub, while Sandy Island (on the north side) forms a small shifting sand cay.
Oeno is an important breeding site for seabirds. There are 12 species that nest on the island, with Murphys Petrel (Pterodroma ultima) being the most numerous.
