Blup Blup is part of the Schouten Islands group, a short chain of six small islands (Bam, Blup Blup, kadovar, Koil, Vokeo and Wei) that are located off the northern coast of New Guinea, opposite the mouth of the Sepik River. Bam lies 23 km to the southeast and Kadovar 11 km to the south. The coast of New Guinea, at Cape Girgir, is situated 34 km south by west.
Although small at 3.5 km by 2 km, Blup Blup is the second largest island of the Schouten Islands afer Vokeo. Like all of the Schouten Islands, Blup Blup is thickly wooded. The interior reaches a maximum elevation of 402 m above sea level at the rim of the wide summit crater. There have been no historically recorded eruptions from Blup Blup; the only sign of activity is a hydrothermal area on the west coast.
The northern coast of the island is protected by a fringing reef that encloses a narrow lagoon. The small island of Mut Mut (Motmot) is located immediately off the southwestern point.
