The Conflict Islands (or Conflict Group) are located 81 km southeast of Normanby Island (in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands), and 35 km directly north the Louisiade Archipelago's Long Reef. The group forms a pear-shaped reef formation of 9 km by 21 km, enclosing a central lagoon of up to 30 m in depth. There are three main passages that connect the lagoon with the surrounding waters of the northeastern Coral Sea — the largest of these, known as Ship Pass, is found on the southwestern side.
Around the northeastern and northwestern reef perimeter are found 18 small islets varying in size from less than 1 hectare to the largest at 0.97 km²; in addition, there are two islets found within the lagoon centre. The southern side of the formation has 3 small and narrow islets. The combined land area for the group is 3.75 km² — the main islands and their areas are as follows: Ilai (97 ha), Panasesa (63.5 ha), Aroroa (61 ha), Panarakuum (38.8 ha), Panibari (24.7 ha), Tubiniguam (17.8 ha), Moniara (13 ha), Ginouri (11 ha) and Tupit (10 ha).
