D'Entrecasteaux Islands

- MODIS image
- date unknown
The D'Entrecasteaux Islands comprise the three large islands of Goodenough, Fergusson, and Normanby (top-left to bottom-right in the image) as well as numerous smaller offshore islands and island groups (see large size image) with a total land area in the region of 3,110 km². The group spans for 160 km northwest to southeast and are separated from the PNG mainland (partly visible at the far left in the image) by the 30 km wide Ward Hunt Strait in the north and by the 18 km wide Goschen Strait in the south.
The heavily forested islands are, in general, mountainous with peaks rising to over 2,500 m. They are hydrothermally active with hot-springs and geysers.
