The Engineer Group of islands (shown here in false colour, with vegetation in greyscale) are found in the southeastern sector of Papua New Guinea, located east from the island of Basilaki and south from Normanby Island. The islands form an unusual group consisting of a mix of high islands, low coral islands, altoll-like reefs and submerged reefs that are arranged loosley in a ring of some 24 km by 14 km.
The southwestern side of the group consists of the three largest islands of Slade Island, Skelton Island and Watts Island; each being 3-4 km in length and 0.5-1 km in width. These reef-fringed islands have hilly interiors with elevations of up to 150 m occurring on Slade Island. The eastern boundary to the Engineer Group is marked by a half-moon shaped reef upon which are located the four low islands of Hummock (on the southeast), Haszard (on the north) and the two small islets of Button Island and Flat Island.
Other islands of the Engineer Group include Bright Island, Good Island and Deeds Island, all located upon the reefs of the northwest. The semi-enclosed lagoon that is formed by the outer islands and reefs contains numerous reefs; the two largest of these contain the islands of Powell and Pender (on the larger, western reef) and Messum Island (on the smaller eastern reef).
