Located in the Bismarck Sea, 16 km off the coast of the northeastern province of Madang, lies the 400 km², volcanically active, island of Karkar. The island is approximately oval in shape, measuring 25 km in length and 19 km in width. It is dominated by the 1,839 m high summit of its caldera-topped volcano. The summit caldera of the Karkar volcano (Mt. Kunugui) consists of an inner and an outer formation (3.2 km and 5.5 km across, respectively), with the inner caldera reaching a depth of over 300 m.

Karkar is heavily forested with lowland forests around the lower slopes and coastal plains, and with montane rainforests being found at higher elevations.
