Long Island

Long Island, Papua New Guinea

Long Island is located at the extreme western end of the Vitiaz Strait, lying 52 km north, off the coast of Madang Province on the PNG mainland (visible at image-bottom), and 60 km northwest from the island of Umboi (at top-right in the image). Also seen in the image are the smaller islands of Crown Island and Tolokiwa located 14 km northwest and 37 km east respectively.

The topography of Long Island is dominated by three features: the two steep volcanoes of Reaumur (1,280 m) and Cerisy (1,112 m), and the 12 km long by 10 km wide, lake-filled caldera of Lake Wisdom. Within Lake Wisdom lies the small islet of Motmot (600 m²) — a volcanic cone which began to emerge in the 1950s.
