New Ireland (Niu Ailan) is the second largest island of the both the Bismarck Archipelago and of all PNG's islands with an area of 7,405 km². The island is extremely narrow and elongated measuring 340 km in length; in width the island averages around 10 km across, widening in the south to 46 km.
