Located 31 km east from Ra'iatea & Taha'a, Huahine — measuring 16 by 13 km — consists of two main islands and a number of small islets with a combined land area of 74 km². The two main islands — which appear as a single landmass — consist of Huahine Nui to the north and Huahine Iti on the south. The islands are surrounded by deep lagoon waters and are bordered by extensive reefs on the western side. On the eastern side reefs are poorly developed and form an extremely narrow barrier to the open sea.
On the northwest side of Huahine Iti lies the 375 ha brackish lake of Lac Fauna Nui (Lac Maeva). The lake is almost completely isolated from the sea except by a single winding channel. The lake is all that remains of an ancient lagoon that is slowly silting up.
