The 11 km² atoll of Tupai is situated 16 km north from Bora Bora (see panoramic image). The formation consists of a broad series of near continuous motu that surround a shallow interior lagoon. The outer reef is generally narrow, except for on the southwest side where it extends for up to 1,500 m. In the north the atoll has a pronounced "beak" where the land extends across a submarine fault scarp.
Particularly prominent in the large size version of the image are the network of roads and pathways found on the northern side (left in the image) as well as the darker strip of the runway that cuts across the northern landmass.
