Anuanurunga forms the central member of a trio of small circular-shaped atolls — the Îles de Duc de Gloucester — that lie in an isolated position far to the south of the main body of the archipelago. Its neighbouring atolls of Anuanuraro (to the northwest) and Nukutipipi (to the southeast) are located 30 km and 23 km distant, respectively. The atoll contains 4 main islands and a number of smaller islets with a total area of 7 km².
