Home to the main population centre and capital of tha nation of Tuvalu, Funafuti — the largest atoll of the Tuvalu group — is located 110 km northwest from Nukulaelae and 85 km southeast from Nukufetau. The atoll is a small to medium-sized formation with a land area of just 2.54 km², consisting of an extremely narrow ring of low-lying reefs and islands that is nowhere broader than 0.4 km in width, with a circumference of 21 km. The large and deep central lagoon measures 14 km in width and is up to 18 km in length.
There are 33 main islets loacted upon the reef, the largest of which are Fongafale, on the east (bottom- right in this image) and Funafala, located on the extreme southeast (bottom-left).
