The low coral island of Nanumanga lies in the northern sector of Tuvalu, located 64 km southeast from Nanumea and 112 km west-southwest from Niutao.
The 3.1 km² island is oval-shaped in outline with its long-axis, orientated from north to south, having a length of 3.5 km; a maximum width of 1.6 km occurs across the island's centre. The well-vegetated interior is flat throughout and contains several brackish lagoons that have no connection to the open sea. A fringing reef surrounds the entire island enclosing a narrow and shallow lagoon.
A submerged shoal of around 1 km in length is located 4 km distant to the north (visible at the top-edge of the above image) — both features lying upon a larger north to south running ridge.
