The atoll of Nui consists of 9 main islands and a dozen or so smaller islands lying on a broad reef flat, shielding the north, east, and south sides of a narrow lagoon. The largest island of Fenua Tapu is the southernmost on the atoll and home to the main settlement — visible as a greyish area at the eastern end of the island. Opposite Fenua Tapu, at the north end of the atoll is Meang — the second largest of the islands. In all, the islets cover an area of 3.37 km².
