Located near the centre of the chain of islands and atolls that form the Tuvalu grouping, Nukufetau lies 86 km northwest from the atoll of Funafuti and 57 km southwest from the island of Vaitupu. The atoll comprises a 14 km by 10 km rectangular-shaped formation — the second largest atoll of the group. Nukufetau has a land area of 3.07 km².
