Futuna is a mountainous island of 62 km², measuring around 20 km in length and 5 km across at its widest point. Its highest point reaches 524 m at Mount Puke. The island is surrounded by a fringing reef system that can be up to 500 m wide in the south and 20-30 m in the north.
Much of the island is densely forested and supports endemic subspecies of the Collared Kingfisher (Halcyon chloris regina), Polynesian Triller (Lalage maculosa futunae) and Fiji Shrikebill (Clytorhynchus vitiensis futunae).
